Reverse Fleece Women's Jackets Recalled by Guess? NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 8, 1997 Release # 98-036 Company Phone Number: (800) 347-1466 CPSC Consumer Hotline: (800) 638-2772 CPSC Media Contact: Ken Giles, (301) 504-7052 CPSC, Guess? Inc. Announce Recall of Reverse Fleece Women's Jackets WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision (CPSC), Guess? Inc. of Los Angeles, Calif., is recalling about 2,300 Guess Jeans Women's Jackets. The reverse fleece jackets failed the federal mandatory standards for fabric flammability. These jackets could ignite easily and present a serious risk of burn injuries in violation of the federal Flammable Fabrics Act. Fabrics that do not comply with the standard typically burn faster than newspaper. CPSC and Guess? Inc. are not aware of any injuries involving these jackets. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. Only the "Heather Charcoal" color of this jacket's fabric is involved in the recall. The fabric is a cotton-polyester blend material with a raised fiber surface. Its fleecy texture closely resembles that of an inside-out sweatshirt. This fabric is often called Sherpa. The jackets are labeled in part, "Guess jeans," "COLOR: HTCL," "CUT 03500", "An American Tradition," "MADE IN USA," and "STYLE 57 809T18." The jacket is button front, long-sleeved, with two welt pockets and yoke. Guess? Inc., and other clothing stores nationwide sold the jackets from August 1997 through October 1997 for about $88. Consumers should immediately stop wearing these jackets and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information about this recall, call Guess? Inc. at (800) 347-1466 between 7:30 a.m and 4:30 p.m. PST Monday through Friday, or write to the company at 1444 South Alameda St., Los Angeles, CA 90021. CPSC learned of the problem through the agency's ongoing garment flammability testing.
