Methodology & data sources
Where the data comes from
All recall records are sourced from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) public recall database via saferproducts.gov. We pull recalls for mattresses, baby gear, major appliances, e-bikes and scooters, heaters, and TVs, then normalize each record: brand, product type, hazard, remedy, units affected, country of manufacture, and retailers.
How the safety signal works
Each brand's safety signal starts at 100 and is reduced using only public facts:
- Points are deducted for each recall on record.
- Higher-severity hazards deduct more (entrapment/suffocation > falls/collapse > flammability > other).
- Recent recalls (last ~3 years) weigh more heavily than older ones.
- Holding a recognized safety certification adds a small amount back.
Every brand page shows the exact inputs behind its score, so the number is auditable rather than a black box.
Limitations
- Absence of a recall is not a guarantee of safety. Not every unsafe product is recalled, and new recalls are issued regularly.
- Certification listings are curated for reference; confirm current status with the certifying body.
- The safety signal is an informational summary, not a substitute for the official CPSC notice.
