How SafetyScored Works
Our Principle
Every product has a safety record — most consumers just can't see it. We surface U.S. government recall data and independent certification status so you can compare brands on safety before you buy. We don't accept payment for placement and we don't invent scores — we let the public record speak.
Data Sources
CPSC Recalls (saferproducts.gov)
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes every consumer product recall: brand, product, hazard type, remedy, units affected, and manufacturing origin. We ingest the full database and refresh regularly.

Safety Certifications
We track independent third-party safety certifications — CertiPUR-US, JPMA, UL, ENERGY STAR, and more — that brands earn voluntarily. These confirm a product meets or exceeds specific safety standards.
How We Score
- Recall history: Number, severity, and recency of CPSC recalls associated with the brand in a given category
- Hazard severity: Fire, carbon monoxide, and entrapment hazards weigh more heavily
- Units affected: Larger recalls indicate broader risk
- Certifications held: Independent safety certifications add positive signal
- Category context: Scores are relative to other brands in the same category
What We Don't Do
- We don't accept payment for better placement or scores
- We don't test products ourselves — we rely on government and certifier records
- We don't provide legal or professional safety advice
- We don't guarantee that zero-recall brands are risk-free
