In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Coleman Company Inc. of Wichita, Kan., is recalling 14,127 Peak 1 22-oz. fuel bottles. These fuel bottles, used for camping equipment, have defective threads in the neck of the bottle that can cause leakage of fuel. CPSC and Coleman have received no report of injuries. This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The Coleman Company is recalling all Peak 1 22-oz. fuel bottles manufactured duringthe first six months of 1996. The red-canistered fuel bottles can be identified by a "1-96" date code stamped into the bottom of the fuel bottle. Consumers could have purchased the defective bottles individually or with Peak 1 Apex stoves. Sporting goods stores and catalogs specializing primarily in backpacking, mountain climbing, and camping equipment sold the subject Peak 1 fuel bottles from May 1996 through September 1996 for $12.50 a bottle. Consumers who have Peak 1 22-oz. fuel bottles should stop using them immediately and call the Coleman Company at (800) 257-5299 or write the company at P.O. Box 2931, Wichita, KS 67201 for instructions on disposing the defective bottles and replacing the bottles at no charge.
